Second: TL DR… just install the latest “stable” LibreOffice and you should be fine….First I would like to thank the many programmers who work, or have been working on it!.So here I am logging my LibreOffice experiences. Accompanying an exodus of programmers it forked to LibreOffice. A laudable effort, partially corrupted by Oracle, but recovering. But it cannot default to it, and the compatibility, especially when it comes to collaborative writing, is not perfect. This Microsoft has contrived to be accepted as a standard. For writing collaborative papers, however, the lowest possible denominator would be Word, or the DOCX format.

There are many many ways to write manuscripts, for instance I recently learned Pandoc for a book. I hate subscriptions (would rather pay for unlimited, and then renew every ≈3 years or so), and considered alternatives. As of version 5.1.3, there are still a lot of complaints about how slow LibreOffice is to save spreadsheets, but other than that, you should find it a lot nicer to work with after making these adjustments. My subscription to Microsoft Office ran out. These settings should make LibreOffice a lot more responsive, although not yet perfect. Cache for inserted objects – Number of objects: 20.Undo – Number of Steps: reduce to somewhere in the 20-30 range.Note that some of these will increase the amount of memory used so LibreOffice will work more efficiently. In Preferences, you can make the Memory settings to optimize LibreOffice performance.

Instead, you’ll find it in Preferences… in the LibreOffice menu.

I’m using it to replace AppleWorks, which is incompatible with OS X 10.7 Lion and later – and I’ve discovered that LibreOffice is no speed demon.ĭo a Google search, and you’ll find all sort of articles on how to speed up LibreOffice, assuming you’re using a PC with Windows or Linux. Like Office, it’s kind of bloated and slow to load. LibreOffice is a competent, free alternative to Microsoft Office.
